View productsFirst-Time Buyer's Guide
If you've never purchased reclaimed lumber before, here's everything you need to know to make a confident first purchase.
Understand the Grades
Our three-tier grading system makes selection simple. Select grade has minimal character marks — ideal for modern, clean designs. Standard grade shows moderate nail holes, patina, and character — the most popular choice. Rustic grade features heavy weathering, saw marks, and bold character — perfect for barn-style and industrial aesthetics.
Expect Variation
Unlike new lumber, reclaimed wood has natural variation in color, grain, and character. This is a feature, not a flaw. Even boards from the same source will have different tones and markings. We recommend ordering 10-15% extra material to allow for selection and cutting waste.
Check Moisture Content
Our reclaimed lumber is air-dried and typically runs 8-12% moisture content (MC), suitable for most interior and exterior applications. If your project requires kiln-dried material (6-8% MC for fine furniture or tight-tolerance installations), we offer kiln-drying services at our facility.
Plan for Processing
Reclaimed lumber can be purchased rough (as-is) or processed. Rough stock is less expensive and ideal if you have your own shop. If you need material planed, resawn, or profiled, add processing to your order — we mill to your exact specifications.
Specify Your Application
Tell us how you plan to use the wood. Structural applications have different requirements than decorative ones. Flooring needs different preparation than accent walls. The more we know about your project, the better we can match the right material and processing to your needs.
Visit Before You Buy
For your first purchase, we strongly recommend visiting our yard in person. Seeing and touching the material helps you understand the difference between grades, species, and character levels. Our team is on-site to answer questions and help you select the perfect boards.
How to Specify Reclaimed Lumber for Your Project
Whether you're an architect writing a spec sheet or a homeowner planning a weekend project, providing the right information upfront ensures we pull the perfect material for your needs. Here's what to include when you request a quote.
Species Preference
Do you want oak, pine, Douglas fir, heart pine, mixed hardwood, or are you open to recommendations? Each species has distinct color, grain, hardness, and workability characteristics.
Dimensions Needed
Specify thickness, width, and length. For rough stock, note whether dimensions are nominal or actual. For milled material, give us the finished dimensions you need.
Quantity (Board Feet)
Calculate your board footage: (Thickness" x Width" x Length') / 12 = board feet. Or tell us the square footage of your project and we will calculate material needs including waste factor.
Grade / Character Level
Select, Standard, or Rustic. If you are unsure, describe the look you want — "clean and modern," "some history but not too rough," or "full barn character" — and we will match a grade.
Processing Requirements
Do you need it rough, planed (S2S or S4S), tongue-and-groove, shiplap, resawn, or custom profiled? Specify the finished surface and profile you need.
Application / End Use
Interior or exterior? Structural or decorative? Flooring, wall, ceiling, furniture? This affects our species recommendation, moisture content requirements, and finish suggestions.
Simple, Transparent Ordering
Whether you need a few boards for a weekend project or a full truckload for a commercial build, our process is the same: straightforward, honest, and efficient.

Can't Find What You Need? We'll Source It.
Our inventory rotates constantly, and we cannot always have every species, dimension, and grade in stock at all times. For material that is not currently available, our custom order process taps into our extensive sourcing network across the upper Midwest.
Custom orders follow a straightforward process: you tell us what you need, we locate the material through our network, and we notify you with pricing and availability. Most common species are sourced within 1-2 weeks. Rare species may take 4-8 weeks depending on availability.
Submit Your Request
Provide the species, dimensions, quantity, grade, and any processing requirements. The more specific you are, the faster we can locate the material.
We Source the Material
Our team reaches out to salvage partners, deconstruction companies, and brokers across MN, WI, IA, and SD. We identify matching material and negotiate pricing.
Approval and Deposit
We present the sourced material with pricing and photos. If approved, a 50% deposit secures the material and initiates transport to our facility.
Processing and Delivery
Material arrives at our yard, passes through our standard QC process, and is milled to your specifications. Standard turnaround from approval to delivery: 2-4 weeks.
Architect & Designer Services
We work with architects, interior designers, and specifiers who need reliable reclaimed material for their projects. Our professional services are tailored to the way design teams work.
Material Specifications
We provide detailed material spec sheets including species, grade, dimensions, moisture content, Janka hardness, origin, and chain-of-custody documentation suitable for inclusion in project specifications.

Chain-of-custody records, salvage source documentation, and waste diversion calculations for LEED credit submissions. We support MR credits for regional materials and recycled content.
Mock-Up and Prototype Support
For accent walls, feature installations, and custom paneling, we build small-scale mock-ups so you can evaluate the material in situ before committing to the full installation.
Budget Estimating
Provide your plans and we will generate a material take-off with pricing for reclaimed lumber options. We can often suggest alternative species that achieve the same aesthetic at a lower cost.
Every Board Meets Our Standard
Reclaimed does not mean rough or unreliable. We hold our inventory to strict quality standards so you can build with confidence.
Hand-Inspected
Every single board is visually inspected for structural integrity, rot, insect damage, and excessive checking before it enters our inventory.
De-Nailed & Cleaned
All fasteners — nails, screws, bolts, and staples — are removed by hand. Surfaces are cleaned of dirt and debris while preserving natural patina.
Graded & Sorted
We grade our reclaimed lumber using a clear, straightforward system: Select (minimal character), Standard (moderate character), and Rustic (heavy character).
Moisture Checked
All lumber is checked for moisture content. Air-dried reclaimed wood typically runs 8-12% MC, making it ready for interior or exterior applications.
Species Verified
We identify every species in our inventory. No guessing — you know exactly what you are buying, whether it is white oak, heart pine, or Douglas fir.
Satisfaction Guaranteed
If your order does not meet the agreed-upon grade and specifications, we make it right. Full replacement or refund, no questions asked.
Frequently Asked Questions About Buying Reclaimed Lumber
How do I know what species and grade I need for my project?
Our team can help. Tell us about your project — flooring, accent wall, furniture, structural use — and we will recommend the best species and grade. For structural applications, we can specify load-bearing grades. For visual applications, we help you choose character level: Select (clean, minimal marks), Standard (moderate nail holes and patina), or Rustic (heavy character, weathering, and saw marks).
Can I visit the yard and select my own boards?
Absolutely. Our Minneapolis yard is open Monday through Friday 7 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 8 AM to noon. Walk-in visitors are welcome. For large orders or custom selections, we recommend calling ahead so a team member can assist you and have material staged for review.
What is your return and exchange policy?
We stand behind our product. If your order does not meet the agreed-upon grade and specifications, we offer full replacement or refund within 14 days of delivery. Material must be in the condition it was delivered — not cut, milled, or installed. Custom-milled and fabricated orders are non-returnable but are covered by our satisfaction guarantee: if we milled it wrong, we remake it at our expense.
Can you match a sample of wood I already have?
In most cases, yes. Bring us a sample board (or a good photo showing species, color, grain pattern, and dimensions) and we will do our best to find a match in our inventory. For rare species like American chestnut or old-growth heart pine, matching may take longer as we source from our network. We provide samples before you commit to a large order.
Do you offer samples before I commit to a full order?
Yes. We offer a sample service for customers who need to review material before committing. For standard inventory items, we can send up to three sample pieces (typically 12-18 inches long) for a small fee that is credited toward your order. For custom milling, we produce a sample section to confirm the profile, finish, and species before running the full order.
How is reclaimed lumber priced compared to new lumber?
It varies by species and grade. Common softwood dimensional lumber (reclaimed pine 2x4s, 2x6s) is typically priced similarly to new lumber or slightly below. Premium species (old-growth white oak, heart pine, American chestnut) and large timbers command prices above new equivalents because these species and sizes are no longer available from new sources. The character and history of reclaimed wood is something new lumber simply cannot replicate at any price.
Can you source a specific species that is not currently in your inventory?
Yes. We maintain an extensive network of salvage partners, deconstruction companies, and barn-wood brokers across the upper Midwest. If a species or dimension is not currently in stock, we can add it to our sourcing list. For common species like oak and pine, we can usually locate material within 1-2 weeks. For rare species like American chestnut or old-growth longleaf pine, sourcing may take 4-8 weeks.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash, check, credit card (Visa, Mastercard, AmEx), ACH bank transfer, and Zelle. Contractor accounts with approved credit can use purchase orders and net-30 terms. For orders over $5,000, we require a 50% deposit with the balance due before delivery or pickup.
Do you provide material certifications for LEED projects?
Yes. We provide chain-of-custody documentation, material origin certificates, and waste diversion reports that support LEED credit submissions under Materials and Resources (MR) categories. Our documentation includes species verification, salvage source details, and processing records. Contact us early in your project so we can coordinate the required paperwork.
